Active parenting and maternal burden are fundamental themes in early childhood policy. At the Criança Feliz evaluation and planning workshop, two topics are discussed with mayors and municipal secretaries of social assistance. The Social Security Secretariat interviews Asiwan Jr., Outpatient and Nursing Coordinator at the First Children’s Institute (Ipeede) and a Master’s student in the Department of Women and Children’s Health at the Federal University of Cear (UFC).
This Tuesday (12), the workshop welcomes Asiwan Junior to discuss the importance of public policies that value the promotion of active parenthood.
1 – What is active parenting?
Active parenthood consists of a set of actions related to the care and attention that a man should give to his children. The society we grew up in is based on patriarchy and still has deep-rooted misconceptions that men should only be financial providers without worrying about the care that should be given to their children in order for them to fully develop. Active parenthood begins when a man can discuss with his partner the decision to have children and the responsibilities that this decision entails.
2 – Is active parenting associated with reduced maternal workload?
They are talking about it all over the world. Some studies even show that women do three times more housework and children than men. In parallel, women are increasingly entering the labor market and gaining their space, continuing to work in three shifts, outside the home and inside. By sharing these activities fairly through active parenting, mothers can have time to take care of themselves, relieving the burden of motherhood.
3 – How can we build more loving parental models of daily care?
With love and care, which are the basis of any relationship. When a child receives love, affection and attention, they form attachment bonds with their parents. One way to build this relationship is to play with your children at home or outside. Reading with them is also important, among other activities that bring greater security and help in the full development of children.
4 – How can the effective presence of parents in raising children affect early childhood and children’s development?
In early childhood, children are at the stage of full development and need a safe environment where everyone around them cares for them. Unfortunately, some children are much more likely to be malnourished, hungry, physically, psychologically and sexually abused, which can lead to increased effects of certain hormones our bodies produce to deal with stress. One of these hormones is cortisol, which can be present for a long time in some children, who will experience problems with learning, speech and other things as a result. So what can avoid this scenario is love, presence of parents and healthy diet.
5 – Does active parenting involve a change in culture, breaking the intergenerational cycle of violence? How can we bring this debate to the center of debate?
When a man actively fulfills his fatherhood, he moves away from the masculine standards imposed by a patriarchal society. The more men begin to participate in the lives of their children, from prenatal care, exams, births, bathing, changing diapers, he will be able to get rid of this image of just a breadwinner and build a different relationship with his family. , your children. I think one way to bring this debate to the center of the discussion is to hold groups in basic medical units where men can express their feelings, problems, wishes and childhood experiences. I believe that these exchanges can effectively help build better men/fathers who are more aware of their role.
