General Motors (GM) workers have decided to go on strike this Sunday (22/10) at a meeting held in front of the São José dos Campos Metal Workers Union.
The movement opposes the mass layoffs carried out by the carmaker on Saturday (21/10), when hundreds of employees were notified by telegram.
The workers, who remain affiliated with GM, informed the assembly of a 100% stoppage of work at the plants. They say they will only return to business if this weekend’s layoffs are lifted.

Union promises war on GM
The strike affects three GM units in Brazil. In addition to São José dos Campos, the company manufactures cars in Moji dos Cruzes and São Caetano do Sul, all towns inside São Paulo, and had about 11,000 employees before the mass layoffs.
“War has been declared to reverse the layoffs. What GM did was cowardice and total disrespect for the workers and the agreement they signed that said there would be no layoffs until May 2024. We will not tolerate any layoffs,” said the statement of the vice-president of the trade union, Valmir Marian.
The automaker did not confirm how many people were laid off, but said the need to cut staff came after several measures to compensate for falling sales.
“We understand the impact this decision may have on people’s lives, but the adjustment is necessary and will allow the company to maintain the flexibility of its operations, ensuring sustainability in the future,” the company explained in a note published on Saturday.
