Colombia will reduce the working day to 44 hours per week

In July 2025, Law 2101 of 2021 will enter into force, establishing a gradual reduction of the working day while keeping its duration at 44 hours per week. This change aims to improve the quality of life of workers without affecting their rights and wages.

As part of the progressive plan established by Law 2101 of 2021, starting July 15, 2025. the maximum working day in Colombia will be 44 hours per week. This measure is aimed at reducing the authorized working hours without prejudice to the rights and remuneration of workers.

The implementation of this law began in July 2023, when the weekly working time was reduced from 48 to 47 hours. In 2024, it was adjusted again to 46 hours, and will now be reduced to 44 hours. According to the established schedule, the final goal is to move to a 42-hour work week in 2026.

Impact on workers and employers

This downsizing benefits both employees and employers, improving quality of life and promoting work-life balance. In addition, the measure will not affect the wages or welfare benefits of workers, who will continue to receive regular compensation regardless of the adjustment to working hours.

It is important to clarify that this change applies to all employees and employers governed by the Basic Labor Code, covering companies of all sizes and sectors, both public and private. Likewise, it includes full-time and part-time workers, excluding only those with special treatment, such as independent contractors or employees with employment contracts that are not governed by regular working hours.

The law also provides for flexibility in the organization of the working day, allowing the parties to agree on the distribution of hours over five or six days, always with a mandatory day of rest.

A step towards working well-being

The reduction in working hours represents a significant advance in Colombian labor law and is in line with international trends that promote the welfare of workers. With this measure, the goal is to increase productivity and improve the living conditions of the workforce while preserving their rights and benefits.

From July 2025, employers and employees must adapt their dynamics to the new rules, which means a new chapter in labor relations in the country.
