Eduardo Saljuanathe president of the Congress, referred to the statement of President Dina Baluarte on the assessment of the application of the death penalty against juvenile rapists and clarified that for this measure it is necessary that Peru withdraw from the Pact of San Jose, which must be discussed in all sectors of the country.
In statements to the press after participating in the working group “Commitment to the safety of citizens”, the head of the parliament noted that if Executive presents a proposal on this matter, it will be discussed in committees and then in plenary, but it was clear what that would mean.
“If there is a legislative initiative, it will be discussed in the commissions and then in the plenary session, but obviously Peru has signed St. Joseph’s Pact which prohibits the death penalty as an alternative in Peru, then this will be an initiative to withdraw from this international pact, which should be widely discussed in all sectors of the country,” he said.
“Anything is possible as long as you put your mind to it”
Saljuana also stated that whenever there are crimes like the ones in recent days that involve minors, this conversation is renewed regarding the use of the death penalty; At the same time, he emphasized that there is still no real offer that would raise him to the front Legislative.
“It’s always good to discuss ideas and proposals, I think it enriches the decisions that are made, because today we got the views and criticism of the Congress, which we got democratically, because it allows us to propose effective and realistic solutions. “Everything is possible to the extent that it is offered, at the moment these are just opinions,” he noted.
