Gone are the “crash, die” days of Chinese-made cars catastrophically breaking apart during safety tests, rupturing on-board dummies and disgusted Europeans.
But times have changed, and so have the Chinese with their “high-tech” electric cars, who have invaded Europe with competitive prices and vehicles that Europeans now need.
Two of them, from Tesla’s biggest competitor, have been included in Euro NCAP and performed very well, receiving five stars each in one of the most stringent safety tests in existence.
BYD Dolphin and BYD Seal have received the highest rating from an independent institute operating in Europe with the support of ADAC, one of the largest drivers’ clubs in the world.
The compact crossover, dressed in a hatch, had 89% of adult protection, 87% of child protection, 85% of pedestrian protection and 79% of active safety systems.
In the side impact test, the highlight is the two central airbags, one of which practically supports the driver’s head, locking it in place during body movement.
BYD Seal can’t perform worse than its younger brother, but the security numbers say otherwise: the advanced electric sedan has a lower percentage.
In adult protection, the Seal scored the same 89% as the Dolphin for adults and a similar 87% for children, but for pedestrians, its form gave it 82%, while the active safety assistance package scored only 76%.
However, the numbers helped, with the BYD Seal earning a 5-star safety rating from Euro NCAP, with the sedan only having one central airbag but two rear side airbags, so a total of nine airbags.
With a stable structure in both cases, the BYD Dolphin and Seal show how much the brand has evolved in terms of safety, in stark contrast to what existed a decade ago when the cars were mostly Toyota clones.
