This Thursday, the 7th, the federal government is launching an operation to rescue a new group of Brazilians from the Israeli-Hamas conflict zone in Gaza.
The Brazilian Air Force plane that will transport the group is scheduled to leave Rio de Janeiro for Egypt this morning. He is to remain in Cairo until the Brazilian group is allowed to cross the Rafah border, from where they will be escorted by Brazilian diplomats to the capital.
The federal government has already requested permission for Brazilians to leave Gaza. However, there is no official return yet. Diplomatic sources informed the newspaper about this Globe this Thursday that the release should come “anytime.”
The south of the enclave, where the group is based, is subject to intense Israeli bombardment. Since the end of the truce, cities such as Khan Younis and Rafah have become targets of Benjamin Netanyahu’s army. The region, it is important to note, is exactly where Israel ordered civilians to move after the conflict escalated.
The group the government is to rescue from Gaza consists of 41 Brazilians and just over 30 Palestinian family members. They are in Rafah, on the Palestinian side, waiting to be released. In total, the government expects to bring an even larger group — 102 people. Of these, 85 are in the most tense conflict zone and another 17 are in nearby cities.
When the new rescue is completed, the number of people repatriated by the Brazilian government will exceed 1,500. A total of 1,400 people were transported by the first flights from Israel to Brazil. After Brazil, it still managed to rescue 32 Brazilians who were in Gaza, the epicenter of the confrontation, and another 32 who were in the West Bank, another zone of tension between Israel and Hamas.
