In a crucial week for the government, Lula has full confidence in Haddad

In a crucial week for the federal government, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) put all his chips on Finance Minister Fernando Haddad. With less than two weeks until the parliamentary recess, there is a race against time to approve a package of economic measures.

The goal is to increase revenue collection, and the main coordinator of this process is the head of the economic group together with the minister of institutional relations, Alexander Padilla.

In the Council for Sustainable Economic and Social Development under the Presidency of the Republic this Tuesday (12), Haddad reinforced the coordinating role of the government’s actions for what he called the “solid development” of the country, in addition to the confidence of Lula.

“In the most difficult moments, when decision-making is crucial to maintain direction, the president has never failed us and approved the decisions taken in the economic sphere to build a strong and sustainable economy without the anxiety that often haunts us from wanting to solve everything for one year,” he said.

Approval of these proposals by December 23 is vital to achieving Haddad’s ambitious target of eliminating next year’s budget deficit, which is fundamental to the Union budget in 2024. Other priorities include the regulation of electronic and sports betting (bets), ICMS taxation of subsidies and the abolition of tax benefits such as interest on share capital (JCP) paid by companies to shareholders.

The minister’s efforts to preserve Lula’s veto of wage exemptions in 17 sectors of the economy still stand. So far, only the taxation of offshore companies and exclusive funds has received the approval of the National Congress, pending the sanction of the President. Everything is expected to be resolved this week.
