Japanese toro? Toyota reveals an electric pickup smaller than the Hilux

Toyota has a lot of knowledge about pickup trucks. A Hilux It is a worldwide success and the Tacoma and Tundra make their mark in the demanding North American market. But the Japanese brand does not seem to be satisfied and has indicated that it should enter the segment of intermediate trucks with a solid body. Last year’s speculation was confirmed by the EPU concept released this Saturday (21), a few days before the Tokyo Motor Show.

Before we move on, a little clarification. Solid pickup trucks (such as the Fiat Toro, Ford Maverick, and Hyundai Santa Cruz) are built like a car, so they’re more comfortable. Body-on-chassis models have an advantage because they can withstand greater loads during heavy duty operations (such as the Hilux, as well as the Ford F-150 and Mitsubishi L200).

The one-piece pickup market is booming all over the world, with good performances from Maverick himself and interesting offers from Hyundai, Chevrolet, Fiat and Ram, the last three here in Brazil. Stay tuned for this segmentToyota presented its news for the Tokyo Motor Show and revealed a solid mid-size pickup truck concept.

The big difference is that the EPU concept will form an electric pickup truck, something still unprecedented in the segment. Taking advantage of more compact mechanical packages, Toyota has created a truck with excellent use of space.

Comm 5.07 m long, only 5 cm longer than a Rampantthe Toyota EPU has an impressive wheelbase of 3.35 m. This is 8 cm longer than the new Ford Ranger, which is considered a mid-range model.

Toyota did not disclose other technical data. Nor do we know when (or when) this concept will be implemented.

If there are still many uncertainties about the production of the EPU, then at least we can talk about the appearance of the concept. Toyota adopted a very clean style. The steeply angled A-pillar is reminiscent of the Tesla Cybertruck. But the rest of the lines are more rounded. The headlights are housed in a plastic frame that spans the entire front width. Instead of a logo, the Japanese brand preferred to use its name in its entirety.

From the side, the main feature is the rear door with a waistline with a pronounced upward line that starts from the middle of the part.

Behind, highlights for bucket access to the cabin it’s in hinged compartment cover with two-stage openingallowing longer loads to be accommodated, but retaining the functionality of the lights, which, like the front optic assembly, are formed by a single plastic frame.

Inside the cabin, we understand why the EPU is still a concept. The futuristic look comes with sleek seats, a steering wheel that does not form a complete rim and a panel full of expressions. The digital dashboard and multimedia center are separated by a small set of keys in the best 1990s Fiat Uno style.

Toyota should take advantage of the Tokyo Motor Show to provide more information about the EPU. If the concept becomes a reality, it will likely be as successful as the brand’s other pickups.
