President Luís Inácio Lula da Silva took part this Friday (8) in Brasilia in the opening of the Electoral Conference of the Workers’ Party (PT), an event that discusses the party’s strategies for next year’s municipal elections, when they will be held, mayors and councilors have been determined for more than 5500 municipalities of the country.

About 2,500 activists, party leaders and politicians attended the convention center hall, including government ministers, governors, First Lady Gianna Lula da Silva and Vice President Geraldo Alcmin (PSB).

In a speech that lasted about 50 minutes, Lula said the results of the government’s actions were yet to be seen and predicted that next year’s electoral dispute should repeat the ideological polarization seen in the 2022 election.

“90% of what we announced has not yet been implemented,” Lula said, stressing that people must continue to demand and ask for more. “Now the economy will grow by at least 3%. We will reach 2 million jobs. Very? No, it’s not much. I want more. And you have to want more. Never being satisfied with what we do. Ask for more. The more demands, the more courage and motivation we have to do things,” he added.

Polarization

Regarding the municipal elections in 2024, Lula said that polarization must return and be confronted without fear, in a competitive manner. “We will have to show that we want democracy, we will hold the most competitive elections, but we will not be afraid of anyone.”

The president strongly defended democracy, citing the past four years and the threat of a democratic breakdown. “Democracy is a fundamental value, not just anything. We have learned to love what democracy is, which means to live democratically in adversity, to live with those who are different, to learn to respect and not to reject.”

He also announced that he will participate in the campaign in 2024, visiting some cities outside of working hours in the presidency of the republic.

The basis

During the opening of the conference, Lula recalled some moments from the PT’s history and asked for the party to return to what it was at the beginning “to restore trust”, asking to resume grassroots work directly in the communities, listening to the people.

According to the president, the party should learn to dialogue with parts of society that are mostly not close to the party, referring to evangelicals.

“Working people, good people, people who often thank the church for taking their husband out of the kashasa to take care of the family,” he added, also mentioning the agribusiness sector and small and medium entrepreneurs.
