Former president Martin Vizcarra has reiterated his intention to run for president in the 2026 general election, despite the disqualification that now prevents him from holding public office.
The former president made these statements after participating in hearings in the subcommittee on constitutional charges of Congress.
In a conversation with Canal N, the former president emphasized that, like any citizen, he has the right to participate in the country’s political life. “Like every citizen, I have the right to lead a political life and participate in the 2026 elections.”he said.
He also noted that the people will decide in the elections whether he will have the opportunity to be a presidential candidate.
Disqualifications Viscara faces
Despitehis ambition, Vizcarra faces a double ban from public office for a total of 15 years, ratified by the Constitutional Chamber of the Judiciary in March 2023.
The first 10-year disqualification is related to his irregular involvement in vaccination with doses of Sinopharm during the COVID-19 pandemic, a scandal that caused great controversy and is popularly known as “Vacunagate”.
The second, from 5 years ago, is related to the Abriens case, where he is accused of facilitating this campaign when he was the Minister of Transport and Communications.
