MinTrabajo to review legal requirements after mass layoffs at Tigo

Colombia’s Ministry of Labor has pledged to guarantee labor rights in a process that could lead to collective redundancies at Tigo (UNE EPM). The company has submitted a request to the ministerial portfolio for technical, operational and financial reasons that will affect a group of workers.

According to the ministry, the administrative process began on January 8 and will be aimed at verifying the compliance of the application with the requirements established by the law. In addition, they said that during this procedure, respect for the human rights of those affected will be guaranteed, including timely notification of workers, guarantees of payment of their labor debts and participation of trade unions and other relevant actors.

Tigo EPM, which currently employs 745 people, has asked to lay off 81 employees. Although the company did not disclose the specific positions or details of those affected, it justified the decision as part of a structural analysis to respond to the economic challenges of the sector and ensure the operational sustainability of the company.

In this context, the Ministry emphasized that as a guarantor of labor rights, its aim is to promote the development of social dialogue as a key tool for solving any labor conflicts and finding a harmonious solution that is beneficial to all interested parties. The collective dismissal request is framed in articles 66 and 67 of Law 50 of 1990, which regulates mass dismissals in Colombia for economic and operational reasons. Now the Ministry of Labor will consider the case and make an appropriate decision based on a comprehensive analysis of the situation.
