The Prosecutor’s Office of Peru has started a preliminary investigation against President Dina Baluarte for alleged dereliction of duty and/or alleged “abandonment of office,” the Ministry of Public Affairs said Thursday, in the latest of several investigations against the president.
This is stated in the statement of the department The facts are that from June 29 to July 9, 2023, the Council of Ministers and the Congress did not report a temporary impediment to perform her duties due to the “surgical intervention to which she was subjected.”
Boluarte, who came to power in late 2022 after the resignation of former president Pedro Castillo, faces other investigations by the prosecutor’s office; the latter was opened in May on charges of “bribery” and illicit enrichment related to the case of improper use of luxury Rolex watches.
He is also awaiting investigation for the deaths of dozens of people during protests that took place between the end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023, after the arrest of Castillo, who tried to illegally dissolve Congress.
