President Dino Baluarte tries to get out of trouble with the old trick of the death penalty | Gustavo Adriansen IACHR | Pact of San Jose | Villa Maria del Triumfo | OPINION

After a terrible murder of a 12-year-old girl in Villa Maria del Triumfo, President In Bolwart demanded to open a discussion on the possibility of introduction capital punishment rapists of children in our country. However, in this context, it is worth asking ourselves how many times we have heard a politician campaign for this proposal over the past decades and how many times, after causing some uproar, the initiative was dropped. On the other hand, how many times has the call coincided with a time when said politician was in an awkward situation or needed a boost in popularity?

It is not for nothing that the rape of a boy or a girl arouses disgust among citizens; and if it led to the death of a minor – boundless outrage. Amid this rage and helplessness, exposing the criminal to crime capital punishment looks like a viable option. If, according to the available information, the radical measure does not act as a deterrent to crime, it at least imposes on the perpetrator a punishment proportionate to the violence committed and ensures that he cannot commit it again…

As you know, the argument has a flip side, which many people around the world subscribe to. But here we want to highlight not the pros and cons, but the way in which politicians often use such a tragedy for their own purposes, knowing that the proposal is difficult to implement. Effectively introducing the death penalty in our country would require a constitutional amendment, denunciation of the Pact of San Jose (which would be a complicated process and entail delicate international consequences for Peru) and would take at least two years… a time that certainly exceeds what the lady left Baluarte in the presidency.

So it appears that, like many other politicians before her, the leader has done little more than dust off an old rhetorical device – a cliché, really – to try to distract us from the predicament she is currently in. cases involving the presidential car (known as the ‘hood’) or possible resignation, which prosecutors are investigating after a rhinoplasty she had in the past year. with absolute secrecy. And it really hurts to see his ministers of interior, economy and health trying to give him an amen. Old tricks do not fool anyone, and those who try to use them are exposed in a miserable light.
