This Monday (11), in room 118 of the headquarters building of the Fiacruz-Ceará Foundation, the Secretariat for the Environment and Climate Change (Sema) presented the members of the Environmental Protection Area Management Plan (APA) of the Rio Package of the Management Council of the State Environmental Unit (UC). On this occasion, Professor Jader de Oliveira Santos, member of the Principal Scientist Program, presented a document, the product of the “Conservation and Sustainable Development Strategies in Priority Conservation Areas in Ceara” project.

According to the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MMA), all UCs must have a management plan. Law No. 9985/2000, which established the National System of Conservation Units (SNUC), defines the Management Plan as a technical document through which, based on the general objectives of the UC, its zoning and the rules according to which they must manage the use of the area and the management of natural resources. “It aims to ensure that the UC fulfills the objectives set for its creation,” said Sema Executive Secretary Fernando Bezerro, who was present at the meeting.

Sema/Funcap Environment Program Coordinator, Luis Ernesto Arruda; Biodiversity Coordinator at Sema Giovanna Rodríguez; and APA manager Rio Pacotti, Leonardo Coutinho, were also involved. At the end of the presentation, there were questions and doubts about the presented plan, which were promptly answered.

About the Pakoti River APA

The Pacoti River APA is a public UC, sustainable use category created by decree and covers an area of 2,914.93 hectares, located in the municipalities of Fortaleza, Eusebio and Aquiros, approximately 30 km from the center of Fortaleza. The main access to this conservation site is via Washington-Soares Avenue and then via Rodovia Street CE 025 km.

The creation of the UC is justified given the richness and importance of the ecosystems around the Pakoti River (mangroves, dunes, plateaus and riparian forests). From an ecological point of view, it presents itself as a region that is quite fragile and therefore subject to special protection by the public authorities and society, in addition to the importance of preserving the basin of the Pacotti River to provide water. Water Fortaleza.
