HARRISBURG, Pa. — Pennsylvania’s unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.5% in August, the lowest rate since January 1976, according to a report released Friday by the state Department of Labor and Industry.
The unemployment rate in the US rose by three-tenths of a percentage point from July to 3.8%. L&I’s press release said the Commonwealth unemployment rate was 0.8 percentage points lower than the August 2022 rate of 4.3%, and the national unemployment rate was unchanged for the year.
Pennsylvania’s civilian labor force — the estimated number of residents who are working or looking for work — rose by 1,000 in the month. Resident employment rose by 6,000 since July, while unemployment fell by 4,000, L&I reported.
Total nonfarm payrolls in Pennsylvania rose by 15,800 over the month to a new record high of 6,164,500 in August. It was the eighth consecutive month that jobs set a new all-time high.
The number of jobs increased compared to July in eight of the 11 industry supersectors, with the largest gains in education and health care (+7,400) rising to record highs. Construction and trade, transportation and utilities also rose to record highs in August.
Over the year, the total number of non-agricultural jobs increased by 153,800, with gains in all 11 supersectors. Education and health services (+50,000) had the largest year-over-year volume growth among supersectors.
